Gift Cards and Cryptocurrency: The Complete Guide
Ten major US gift cards, assessed for what they genuinely do in a crypto context. The short answer is that none of them buys crypto on a licensed exchange, most of them can be bought with crypto, and all of them are scam magnets. The long answer is card by card.
- No licensed US exchange accepts any retail gift card as a funding method
- Most major cards can be purchased with crypto through gift card services
- Gift cards remain among the most-reported payment methods in US consumer fraud

Why gift cards and crypto keep getting confused
The question "can I buy bitcoin with a gift card?" is one of the most-searched in consumer crypto, and the volume tells you something. Very few people wake up wanting to convert Amazon credit into digital assets. They ask because somebody suggested it — and in a large share of the cases we see, that somebody was either running a fraud or being defrauded themselves.
The underlying confusion is reasonable, though. A gift card feels like money. It has a number, a balance and a value. So why can it not buy something?
The answer is that a gift card is not a payment instrument, it is a claim against one company for goods from one catalogue. It has no routing number, no card network behind it, and no way for a third party to convert it into dollars in a bank account. Every crypto exchange serving Maryland residents must hold a money transmitter licence under the Maryland Money Transmission Act, and a licensed transmitter can only accept payment it can actually settle.
The one apparent exception is a prepaid Visa or Mastercard, which does run on a real card network. Those are usually declined too, and for a different reason — an exchange must match the cardholder against the verified account holder, and an anonymous prepaid card breaks that chain. Our prepaid Visa page explains the mechanics.
Every card, assessed
Two columns matter: whether the card can buy crypto, and whether crypto can buy the card. A third — scam exposure — is our assessment of how often each product appears in reported fraud relative to the others.

Buying gift cards with crypto: the direction that works
This is the genuinely useful half of the subject, and it is worth explaining properly because a lot of people holding crypto do not realise how straightforward it is.
Services such as Bitrefill and Coinsbee sell gift cards for cryptocurrency. Bitrefill lists thousands of gift cards, mobile top-ups and eSIMs across dozens of countries. You pay in bitcoin, ether, USDT or another supported asset and receive a code, usually within minutes. From there it is an ordinary gift card with ordinary terms.
For someone holding crypto who wants to spend it without selling on an exchange and withdrawing to a bank, this is the shortest path. A laptop from Best Buy, groceries from Walmart, a subscription through Google Play — all one transaction.
Three things to check every time
The applied rate. Gift card services set their own exchange rate and it is not always at par. Compare against a live market price before confirming. A three percent margin on a $1,000 purchase is $30 you did not have to spend.
The region. Apple, Google Play, Steam and several others are country-locked. A card issued for the wrong market will not redeem and generally cannot be exchanged.
The tax event. This is the one people miss. Spending appreciated cryptocurrency is a disposal. In Maryland the gain is taxed as ordinary income at up to 5.75%, with no long-term discount, plus your county piggyback rate. Buying a $1,500 laptop with bitcoin acquired for $400-equivalent creates an $1,100 gain, whether or not any form arrives.
If you do this regularly, track it from the start
Twelve gift card purchases across a year is twelve separate disposals, each requiring a cost basis calculation. Reconstructing that the following April is genuinely miserable. Crypto tax software costs less than the accountant hours it saves.
The fraud problem, and how to end it in one sentence
Gift cards have been among the most-reported payment methods in US consumer fraud for years. The FTC has published analysis showing that when scammers directed victims to buy Target cards specifically, the median reported loss was around $2,500 — higher than for any other brand named in reports.
The script does not vary much. A caller asserts authority or emergency — a government agency, a utility, tech support, law enforcement, a grandchild in trouble, a supervisor, a romantic interest. They manufacture urgency and, crucially, keep the victim on the line so there is no opportunity to consult anyone. The victim is directed to buy cards, often several, sometimes at multiple stores to avoid triggering staff intervention, and to read the codes back or photograph the reverse.
The behavioural mechanics are identical to the crypto kiosk fraud that drove Maryland to pass its virtual currency kiosk law in 2025. Only the payment rail changes.
The rule
No government agency, court, police force, jail, bail bondsman, utility, bank, employer or debt collector accepts gift cards as payment. Neither do the retailers themselves — Amazon and Apple both publish explicit warnings that a request to pay with their cards is a scam. There is no exception and there never has been.
If somebody is on the phone with you while you stand in a checkout queue buying gift cards, hang up and call a family member. That single behaviour defeats every version of this fraud.
If it has already happened
Contact the card issuer immediately — Amazon, Apple, Walmart, Target and Google all operate gift card fraud processes, and unspent balances can sometimes be frozen if you act within minutes. Then report to the FTC, to the Maryland Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, and to your county police. Keep the cards, the receipts and the packaging — issuers ask for all three.
Our Maryland scam guide covers the local variants of this script, including the ones targeting eastern Baltimore County and the Silver Spring corridor.
Gift card and crypto questions
Can you buy bitcoin with a gift card?
Not on any licensed US exchange. Gift cards are store credit rather than a payment instrument that can be settled through the banking system, so a licensed money transmitter cannot accept them. Peer-to-peer trades exist, but they place all the settlement risk on the person sending crypto — your transfer is irreversible while the card balance can be drained or reversed.
Can you buy gift cards with crypto?
Yes. Services such as Bitrefill and Coinsbee sell thousands of gift cards for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, delivering codes by email. This is a legitimate and genuinely useful way to spend crypto. Remember that spending appreciated crypto is a taxable disposal in Maryland, taxed as ordinary income plus your county piggyback rate.
Why do scammers ask for gift cards?
Because gift card payments are fast, effectively anonymous and irreversible once the code is read out, with no bank sitting in between to notice or reverse the transaction. Gift cards have been among the most-reported payment methods in US consumer fraud for years, and FTC analysis has found Target cards producing the highest median losses of any brand.
Does any legitimate organisation accept gift cards as payment?
No government agency, court, police force, jail, utility, bank, employer or debt collector accepts gift cards. Neither do the retailers themselves for account problems — Amazon and Apple both publish explicit warnings to that effect. There is no exception, and anyone claiming otherwise is defrauding you.
Which gift cards can be used with crypto services?
For buying crypto: none, through any licensed route. For spending crypto: most major retail cards are available through gift card services, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Apple, Google Play, Steam, eBay, Best Buy and Starbucks. Prepaid Visa cards are a separate category — they run on a real card network but are usually declined by exchanges for compliance reasons.
Prepaid vouchers
Vouchers are a different product from gift cards — bearer codes bought with cash, designed to fund online accounts rather than to shop at one retailer. A few of them genuinely do connect to crypto.
There is no card shortcut to owning crypto
Every gift card route adds cost, adds counterparty risk, or both. A licensed exchange funded by bank transfer costs about a quarter of a percent and takes an afternoon to set up.
