Flexepin Vouchers and Cryptocurrency

Flexepin is the exception in this section. Most prepaid vouchers are only accepted by platforms operating outside US licensing, but Flexepin is supported by CEX.IO — which holds a Maryland money transmitter licence. That makes it the one cash voucher worth taking seriously here.

  • A 16-digit PIN bought with cash, no bank account or card required
  • Accepted by CEX.IO, which holds a Maryland money transmitter licence
  • One-time use and non-reloadable — the voucher is spent in full

CEX.IO is legal to use in Maryland. It is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business and holds a Maryland money transmitter licence, NMLS ID 1804170.

Buy it with crypto? no

Flexepin is a funding instrument rather than a spending one. There is no meaningful reason to buy a Flexepin voucher with crypto.

How Flexepin works

Flexepin is a prepaid cash voucher. You buy one at a participating retailer or through an authorised online reseller, receive a 16-digit PIN, and enter that PIN on a platform that accepts Flexepin as a funding method. The value credits to your account and the voucher is spent.

Three design features define it:

No bank account or card is required to buy one. That is the entire point of the product — it converts physical cash into something usable online.

It is single-use. Flexepin vouchers are not reloadable and are redeemed in full. If you buy a $100 voucher and want to fund $60, you fund $100 or you buy a smaller voucher. Plan denominations accordingly.

No personal data is collected at purchase. You are buying a numbered code, not opening an account. This is where people sometimes assume the whole chain is anonymous, and it is not — see the KYC section below.

Flexepin supports several currencies including US dollars, alongside Canadian and Australian dollars, euros, sterling and New Zealand dollars, which reflects where its retail footprint is strongest.

Availability in Maryland. Flexepin's US presence runs mainly through authorised online resellers rather than the broad convenience-store distribution it has in Australia and Canada. In practice that means most US buyers acquire vouchers online, which somewhat undercuts the cash-in-hand use case — though it remains useful for anyone who wants to fund an exchange without linking a bank account directly.

Buying cryptocurrency with Flexepin

This is why Flexepin has its own page while several other vouchers get a warning.

CEX.IO publishes a dedicated route for buying bitcoin and other cryptocurrency with Flexepin. CEX.IO is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business and holds a Maryland money transmitter licence under NMLS ID 1804170 — which you can verify yourself on NMLS Consumer Access. That combination is genuinely unusual for a voucher-funded route.

The significance for a Maryland reader is regulatory rather than technical. Most platforms accepting prepaid vouchers for crypto are offshore, lightly regulated, and do not hold the state licence required to serve Maryland residents. A voucher route offered by a licensed transmitter is a different proposition entirely.

The process, in outline:

  1. Buy the voucherFrom a participating retailer or an authorised online reseller, in the denomination you intend to fund.
  2. Open and verify your exchange accountFull identity verification with a Maryland driver's licence or state ID. This happens regardless of how you fund.
  3. Redeem the PINEnter the 16-digit code as a funding method. The value credits to your account balance.
  4. Buy on the advanced interfaceNot the simple buy button — the order book charges a published fee rather than a spread.
  5. Withdraw to self-custodyFor anything you intend to hold. Send a small test first.

Check the current fee for voucher funding against the platform's fee schedule before buying the voucher, and compare it with an ordinary ACH transfer if a bank account is available to you. ACH is almost always cheaper.

The anonymity misunderstanding

This trips people up often enough to deserve its own section.

Buying a Flexepin voucher generally requires no personal data. You hand over cash and receive a code. That is genuinely private at the point of purchase.

Redeeming it is not. Any platform licensed to serve Maryland residents must comply with federal anti-money-laundering requirements and with the conditions of its state money transmitter licence. That means full identity verification — name, address, date of birth, a government ID, usually a selfie — before you can trade or withdraw.

So the voucher removes a bank from the chain. It does not remove identity verification, and it cannot, because the requirement sits on the exchange rather than on the payment instrument.

Why this matters practically: if a platform accepts vouchers and skips identity verification, that is not a feature. It is a signal that the platform is operating outside the regulatory framework, which means it also has no obligation to safeguard your funds, no supervisor to complain to, and — under the Maryland Money Transmission Act — very likely no licence to serve you at all.

The legitimate use of a voucher is to fund an account without linking a bank, for people who prefer that or lack the option. It is not a route to an anonymous position, and anybody selling it as one is selling something else.

Voucher-specific risks and Maryland context

Treat the PIN as cash. Once someone has the sixteen digits, they can redeem the voucher. There is no cardholder verification, no chargeback, no dispute process. Never photograph a PIN, never send it in a message, never read it to anyone on a phone.

Buy from official channels only. Voucher codes sold at a discount on marketplaces or forums are frequently either already redeemed, purchased with stolen cards, or fictional. Use participating retailers or the resellers Flexepin lists.

Watch the denominations. Because vouchers are single-use, buying a $500 voucher to fund a $200 purchase means the remaining $300 sits in your exchange balance. That is fine if you intend to trade it, and awkward if you did not.

The classic voucher scam. Same script as every gift card fraud: a caller asserting authority or emergency instructs the victim to buy vouchers and read the PINs over the phone. No agency, court, utility, bank or employer accepts prepaid vouchers as payment. Ever. Our Maryland scam guide covers the local variants.

Where this sits among Maryland options. If you have a bank account, ACH funding at a licensed exchange costs less and involves fewer moving parts. Flexepin's genuine value is for someone who wants to fund an exchange with cash without linking a bank — a narrower but real use case. Compared with a crypto kiosk at 9–20%, a voucher route through a licensed exchange is very likely the cheaper of the two cash options. Compare the current fees before committing.

Flexepin questions

Can I buy bitcoin with Flexepin?

Yes. CEX.IO publishes a dedicated route for buying cryptocurrency with Flexepin vouchers, and it holds a Maryland money transmitter licence under NMLS ID 1804170 as well as FinCEN MSB registration. Check the current voucher funding fee against the platform's schedule before buying.

Is buying crypto with Flexepin anonymous?

No. The voucher purchase itself generally requires no personal data, but any licensed exchange redeeming it must perform full identity verification — name, address, government ID and usually a selfie. That obligation sits on the exchange, not the payment method. A platform accepting vouchers without KYC is operating outside the regulatory framework.

Where can I buy Flexepin in Maryland?

Flexepin's US distribution runs mainly through authorised online resellers rather than the wide convenience-store network it has in Australia and Canada. Check Flexepin's own site for current authorised sellers, and avoid discounted codes offered on marketplaces or forums.

Are Flexepin vouchers reloadable?

No. Vouchers are single-use and redeemed in full. Choose your denomination to match what you intend to fund, or expect the remainder to sit in your exchange balance.

What happens if someone gets my Flexepin PIN?

They can redeem it, and it is gone. Treat the sixteen digits exactly like cash — never photograph them, never send them in a message, and never read them to anyone on a phone. There is no cardholder verification, no chargeback and no dispute process.

There is no shortcut that beats a licensed exchange

Every card and voucher workaround adds cost, adds counterparty risk, or both. A Maryland-licensed exchange funded by bank transfer costs about a quarter of a percent.
