Best Buy Gift Cards and Cryptocurrency

Best Buy cards come up in crypto conversations for a specific reason: people want hardware. Graphics cards, storage, laptops, sometimes a hardware wallet. Here is what the card can genuinely do, what it cannot, and an honest assessment of buying mining gear at retail prices in Maryland.

  • No licensed exchange accepts Best Buy gift cards as funding
  • Best Buy stocks components but not dedicated mining hardware
  • Never buy a hardware wallet from anywhere but the manufacturer

CEX.IO is legal to use in Maryland. It is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business and holds a Maryland money transmitter licence, NMLS ID 1804170.

No licensed exchange accepts Best Buy cards. The peer-to-peer market for electronics cards is small and heavily fraud-affected.

Buy it with crypto? yes

Best Buy gift cards can be bought with crypto through gift card services — a practical way to convert digital assets into hardware.

What the card does

Best Buy gift cards work in Best Buy stores and on BestBuy.com, with no expiry and no fees. They cannot buy other gift cards, are not redeemable for cash except where required by law, and some services are excluded.

As with every retailer card, no licensed cryptocurrency exchange accepts them. A Maryland money transmitter can only accept payment instruments it can settle through the banking system, and store credit is not one.

The peer-to-peer market for electronics gift cards is thinner than for Amazon or Walmart cards, which makes it slightly less fraud-saturated and no more advisable. The same asymmetry applies: your crypto transfer is irreversible, the card balance is not.

What makes Best Buy worth its own page is the other direction — using crypto to buy hardware. Maryland has Best Buy locations across the Baltimore–Washington corridor, and for someone holding crypto who wants a laptop, a monitor or storage, a gift card bought through a crypto service is a practical route.

What Best Buy does not stock is dedicated cryptocurrency mining hardware. Application-specific miners come from a small number of manufacturers and specialist resellers, not from mainstream electronics retail. What Best Buy does have that is relevant is graphics cards, high-capacity storage, networking equipment and power supplies.

An honest look at home mining in Maryland

Since this is the card people buy hardware with, it is worth addressing the underlying idea directly rather than leaving it implied.

Bitcoin mining at home in Maryland is not economic for almost anyone. Bitcoin mining is dominated by application-specific machines running in industrial facilities with electricity contracts residential customers cannot obtain. Maryland's residential electricity rates sit in a band that makes hobbyist bitcoin mining a reliable way to convert dollars into slightly fewer dollars, plus heat.

The three variables are hardware cost, electricity price and network difficulty. A residential customer loses on all three: retail hardware prices, retail power rates, and a difficulty level set by competitors operating at industrial scale.

GPU mining is a different question and a narrower one. Ethereum's move to proof of stake in 2022 removed the largest GPU mining market, and what remains is smaller, more volatile and considerably harder to model. Anyone considering it should build the spreadsheet before buying the card — hardware cost, power draw, your actual per-kilowatt-hour rate, and a realistic assumption about revenue — and should assume the answer is negative unless it clearly is not.

Two Maryland-specific factors. Residential electricity rates here are not among the cheapest in the country, which is the single largest input. And if you rent, mining hardware running continuously may breach your lease terms on power usage or noise — a genuinely common problem given how loud this equipment is.

None of this means don't. It means model it honestly first, and be suspicious of any calculator that omits your actual electricity rate.

Hardware wallets: the one purchase to get right

The most valuable crypto-related hardware most people will buy is a hardware wallet, and it is also the purchase with the strictest rules.

⚠ Buy from the manufacturer, only

Never buy a hardware wallet from a marketplace, an auction site, a third-party seller or second-hand. Supply-chain tampering is a documented attack: a device supplied with a pre-generated recovery phrase lets the seller empty it at any time after you fund it. If a device arrives with a recovery phrase already written down, it is compromised. Return it.

The device must generate the recovery phrase itself, on first setup, in front of you. That is the whole security model.

Best Buy has at times carried hardware wallets in some markets, and buying from a major retailer is safer than a marketplace — but the manufacturer's own store remains the gold standard, and it is what we would use.

What you actually need with it: something to record the recovery phrase on that survives fire and water. Stamped steel plates cost less than the wallet itself. Two copies, stored in physically separate buildings. Our custody guide covers the full setup, and our Ellicott City page explains why physical backup planning matters more in Maryland than the generic advice suggests.

Buying Best Buy credit with crypto

Gift card services such as Bitrefill and Coinsbee sell Best Buy gift cards for bitcoin and other assets, delivered as a code.

For a crypto holder wanting a laptop, a monitor, a phone or storage, this is one of the cleaner spending routes. High-value items, physical stores across Maryland for returns and support, and no need to disclose a shipping address to a crypto service.

Points to check:

  • The applied rate. Compare against a live market price. On a $1,500 laptop purchase, a three percent margin is $45.
  • Whether the code works in-store. Confirm the redemption method before you are standing at a till with a laptop.
  • The Maryland tax event. This is where it bites hardest, because the amounts are large. Spending appreciated crypto is a disposal — a $1,500 purchase using bitcoin acquired for $400-equivalent creates a $1,100 gain, taxed as ordinary income at up to 5.75% plus your county piggyback rate, with no long-term discount.

That tax point is the one people consistently miss on large purchases. Buying a laptop with appreciated crypto is not a way of avoiding a sale — it is the sale, plus a laptop. Budget for it.

Best Buy Gift Card questions

Can I buy crypto with a Best Buy gift card?

No licensed exchange accepts Best Buy gift cards. They are store credit rather than a payment instrument a money transmitter can settle. The peer-to-peer market for electronics cards is thin and carries the same structural risk as any gift card trade.

Does Best Buy sell bitcoin mining hardware?

Not dedicated application-specific miners — those come from a small number of manufacturers and specialist resellers. Best Buy stocks graphics cards, storage, networking equipment and power supplies, which are relevant to GPU mining and to general computing rather than to bitcoin mining.

Is home crypto mining worth it in Maryland?

For bitcoin, almost certainly not. Mining is dominated by industrial facilities with electricity contracts residential customers cannot obtain, and Maryland residential rates make hobbyist mining uneconomic. GPU mining changed fundamentally when Ethereum moved to proof of stake in 2022. Model it with your actual per-kilowatt-hour rate before buying anything, and check your lease if you rent.

Where should I buy a hardware wallet?

Directly from the manufacturer. Never from a marketplace, an auction site, a third-party seller or second-hand. A device supplied with a pre-generated recovery phrase lets the seller empty it after you fund it. The device must generate the phrase itself during setup, in front of you.

Can I buy a laptop with bitcoin?

Yes, most simply by buying a Best Buy gift card through a crypto gift card service. Note that this is a taxable disposal in Maryland — a $1,500 purchase using crypto acquired for $400-equivalent creates a $1,100 gain, taxed as ordinary income plus your county piggyback rate. Budget for the tax alongside the laptop.

There is no shortcut that beats a licensed exchange

Every card and voucher workaround adds cost, adds counterparty risk, or both. A Maryland-licensed exchange funded by bank transfer costs about a quarter of a percent.
