eBay Gift Cards and Cryptocurrency

eBay is the one retailer on this list where people genuinely have tried to buy cryptocurrency directly — through listings offering coins, mining contracts or wallet transfers. eBay prohibits most of it, and the listings that slip through are almost uniformly fraudulent. Here is the honest picture.

  • eBay gift cards cannot fund any licensed crypto exchange
  • eBay restricts listings for cryptocurrency and related products
  • Buying eBay credit with crypto works through gift card services

CEX.IO is legal to use in Maryland. It is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business and holds a Maryland money transmitter licence, NMLS ID 1804170.

What an eBay gift card can and cannot do

eBay gift cards apply as a payment method at checkout on eBay.com. Because eBay is a marketplace rather than a retailer, the catalogue is enormous — which makes the card more flexible than most, and creates more edge cases.

What works: most ordinary listings across most categories, applied at checkout alongside another payment method if the balance is insufficient.

What does not: certain excluded categories, which have historically included some vehicle and real estate listings and other gift cards. eBay also caps the total gift card balance an account can hold, which matters if you are assembling several.

No expiry and no fees on US cards, and no cash redemption except where required by law.

The gift card exclusion is the one worth noting in a crypto context. It exists for the same reason Target and Amazon impose it: converting one gift card into another is a standard laundering step, and platforms close it deliberately.

One further practical note. Because eBay is a marketplace, a gift card pays the platform, and the platform pays the seller. That is a genuine advantage over a direct peer-to-peer payment — the money passes through a system with dispute resolution attached, which is precisely what off-platform arrangements strip away.

The crypto-on-eBay problem

eBay is unusual in this section because it is the one place people have genuinely tried to buy cryptocurrency with a card, through listings rather than exchanges.

eBay restricts these. Its policies limit listings for cryptocurrency and related items, for a straightforward reason: a digital currency transfer is irreversible and unverifiable by the platform, which makes buyer protection unworkable and the category a fraud magnet.

The listings that do appear fall into recognisable patterns:

  • "Physical" coins. Often collectibles with no cryptocurrency attached, sold with imagery implying they carry value. Some are legitimate novelty items honestly described; many are not.
  • Paper wallets and "loaded" cards. Sold as containing a balance. The seller has the private key and can sweep the funds at any moment, before or after delivery.
  • Mining contracts and hosted hashpower. A category with a long history of non-delivery.
  • Direct transfer arrangements. A listing for a nominal item with the real transaction agreed off-platform — which voids buyer protection entirely and is exactly how the fraud is designed to work.

⚠ The pre-configured hardware wallet

The most damaging eBay crypto fraud is a hardware wallet sold as new but supplied with a pre-printed recovery phrase, or configured with a seed the seller retains. The buyer funds it and the seller empties it, sometimes months later. Never buy a hardware wallet second-hand or from a marketplace. Buy directly from the manufacturer, and never use a device that arrives with a recovery phrase already written down. Our custody guide covers this.

Buying eBay credit with cryptocurrency

This works, and for someone holding crypto it is one of the more useful gift card options because the eBay catalogue is so broad — used goods, parts, tools, collectibles and a great deal that no single retailer stocks.

Gift card services such as Bitrefill sell eBay credit for bitcoin and other assets, delivering a code by email.

Points to check:

  • Region. Buy the US version for eBay.com.
  • The applied rate. Compare against a live market price before confirming.
  • Balance caps. eBay limits the total gift card balance an account may hold. If you are buying a large amount, check the ceiling first.
  • The Maryland tax event. Spending appreciated crypto is a disposal, taxed as ordinary income at up to 5.75% plus your county piggyback rate, with no long-term discount.

Used this way you keep eBay's buyer protection on the underlying purchase, which is the whole point of transacting on the platform rather than around it.

The safer path, and what Maryland law adds

If your goal is to acquire cryptocurrency, eBay is not a route. There is no licensed mechanism, the marketplace restricts the category, and the listings that exist are dominated by fraud with no buyer protection attached.

The alternative is the same one on every page here: a platform holding a verifiable Maryland money transmitter licence, funded by bank transfer, traded on an advanced interface at roughly a quarter of a percent. Our exchange comparison covers which ones qualify.

Two Maryland-specific points worth adding.

First, anybody selling cryptocurrency to others as a business — including through marketplace listings — is likely engaged in money transmission, which requires a state licence under Title 12 of the Financial Institutions Article. Unlicensed money transmission is prosecuted in Maryland. A private seller on a marketplace is very unlikely to hold that licence.

Second, if you are defrauded in a marketplace crypto transaction, the reporting route is the Maryland Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, your county police, and the FBI's IC3. Marketplace buyer protection generally does not cover digital currency, and it certainly does not cover anything arranged off-platform.

eBay Gift Card questions

Can I buy bitcoin on eBay?

eBay restricts cryptocurrency listings, and the ones that appear are overwhelmingly fraudulent — paper wallets whose keys the seller retains, mining contracts that never deliver, or arrangements moved off-platform to void buyer protection. Buyer protection cannot verify a blockchain transfer, which is precisely why the category is restricted.

Can I use an eBay gift card to buy crypto?

No licensed exchange accepts eBay gift cards. They are store credit that cannot be settled through the banking system, and eBay cards cannot be used to buy other gift cards either.

Can I buy an eBay gift card with crypto?

Yes, through gift card services such as Bitrefill. Buy the US version, compare the applied rate against a live market price, and note that eBay caps the total gift card balance an account may hold. Spending appreciated crypto is a taxable disposal in Maryland.

Is it safe to buy a hardware wallet on eBay?

No. Buy directly from the manufacturer only. Second-hand and marketplace devices may be supplied with a recovery phrase the seller retains, which lets them empty the wallet at any point after you fund it. Never use a hardware wallet that arrives with a pre-printed recovery phrase.

Do eBay gift cards expire?

No. US eBay gift card funds do not expire and there are no purchase or maintenance fees. They are excluded from certain categories and are not redeemable for cash except where required by law.

There is no shortcut that beats a licensed exchange

Every card and voucher workaround adds cost, adds counterparty risk, or both. A Maryland-licensed exchange funded by bank transfer costs about a quarter of a percent.
